デペッシュ・モードが世界的になった記念すべきアルバムであると同時に、とてもリスナーにとって愛すべき一枚。
あなたはひょっとして、このアルバムを「ネヴァー・レット・ミー・ダウン・アゲイン」だけの一枚だと思っているかもしれない。
ところがおしまいまで、１０曲（このヴァージョンでは１０曲以上あるが）じっくり聴いてみると、その素晴らしさがわかるのだ。「Nothing」「Pimpf」などは、DMをこれまで聴いたことのない方にも素晴らしいと思うだろう。
必ずしもキャッチーでない曲群が、是非とも聴いて欲しいものであると同時に、記念すべきものである・・・「ストレンジラヴ」（シングル・ヴァージョンのほうが素敵だと感じる方が多いことだろう）「ビハインド・ザ・ウィール」「アイ・ウォント・ユー・ナウ」などが、それにあたる。
DMを愛する人間にはピンからキリまでいらっしゃるのだ。トリビュートCD「フォー・ザ・マスィズ」で、デフトーンズかカヴァーしたのは「トゥー・ハヴ・アンド・トゥー・ホールド」である。決して万人に受け付ける曲ではないだろうが、好きな人間にはとことん好きなのだ。万人受けする「ヴァイオレーター」とは毛色の違うCDなのだ。
DMを愛する方にとっては、DMがこれまで作ってきたアルバムに、無駄なものなどないのだ。もちろん、本作も例外ではない。あなたがDMのリスナーであり、彼らを愛していて、本作を聴いたことがないなら、日本盤でも本ヴァージョンでもいい、是非聴いて欲しい。
ちなみに、ドキュメンタリーDVDの中で、メンバーは「ネヴァー・レット・ミー・ダウン・アゲイン」は、サンプリング・マシンから偶然出てきたサウンドをアレンジして作ったもので、何の苦労もなしにできあがった曲だ、と公言している。
そんな「偶然」が、あれほどの世界的名曲になるとは、メンバーも想像していなかったに違いない。

シンプルなサウンドでアメリカで成功した作品

退廃的かつダークなサウンドを突き詰めた前作「ブラックセレブレーション」とは打って変わってサンプリングサウンドが大幅に減り、シンプルな力強いビートを基調とした骨太のサウンドプロダクションとなっており、今まで鬼門とされていたアメリカでも受け入れられ大ヒットとなった。ただアメリカ受けを狙ってサウンドをシンプルにし過ぎた結果、シングルカット曲以外のアルバム収録曲は音数が少な過ぎてデモテープ並みに聴こえてしまうものもあり、従来の緻密なサウンドを期待すると物足りない。以前の通常ＣＤではラストに収録されていたボーナストラックのおかげで何とかテンションが最後で盛り上がるが、この盤ではカットされているので、アルバム全体としてはかなり地味な印象となってしまうのではないか。

退廃の宴

一般的には次作のviolatorが彼らの最高傑作として認知されているようですが、
私なりの意見を言わせてもらうと、一言にして飽きやすいのです。シンプルな音響空間が
かえってチープな印象を与えているのかもしれません、ただやはり一般的な最高傑作は
violator なのです。

この作品は1987年に発表された物で、全編にわたって４ＡＤのような甘美漂う幻想的なアプローチが施されており、音が粒子のように細かく夢を見ているようです。

私はこの作品を彼らの最高傑作に掲げます。
意外に聞き逃している方がいるのではないかと思うので、是非この圧倒的な音楽体験を...

デペッシュ･モード　一つの時代の終焉

あたしは実は幼い頃から､洋楽に馴染んでいるとはいえ､実はデペッシュを聞き逃していた。あたしが彼らの曲を聴き始めたのは９０年代に入ってから､「I Feel You｣にはホントどきもを抜いた。それから彼らの作品なら何でも聴きたいという衝動に駆られ､過去の曲を貪り聴いた。そしてあたしなりに発見した…デペッシュは表層的｢黒さ｣から精神内部の｢黒さ｣へと深化していったのだと。このアルバムではまだ表層的に黒い。デイヴは「このアルバムを作り終えて､今までの時代の終焉を迎えたんだ｣といっているが､あたしなりに解釈するとこのアルバムを作り終えてから精神内部の黒さへと移っていったのではないか。だが､このアルバムには来るべき新たな黒さが滲み出している。その意味でこのアルバムは表層的黒さの臨界点と同時に精神内部的黒さのグランド･ゼロではないか。デペッシュのこのチャレンジには今もエールを送る。
