マーティンの「ジューダス」

まったく無駄のない、純粋な「デペッシュ・モードのアルバム」、これがそうだ。
映像作品「デヴォーショナル」をご覧になった方は、本作の末尾の曲「ハイアー・ラヴ」が特に印象に残っているのではないだろうか。
マーティン・ゴアという、ロック・ポップス史上でも有数の奇人は、宗教に関してもクールだ。とあるインタヴューに彼はこう答えている「信仰に何か救いがあるとは思わない」。なお、このアルバムタイトルを直訳すれば「信念と帰依の歌」だ。
宗教にも信仰にも、マーティンという人はなにか意味があるとは思っていないだろう。なお、彼はこうも発言している。「僕はニール・ヤングやジョン・レノンがしていたことをやりたいんだ」とも。この発言からは、ひょっとしたら、彼が青臭い純情な人間である、と誤解される方もいらっしゃるかもしれない。
この発言の真意は、あくまで「音楽」として、「みんなに聞いて欲しい美しい曲」を作り続けたい、ということだ。泥臭いものは極力、廃棄してまで。
これは反ロックではないか・・・そう感じる方もいるかも。いや実際、マーティンは「ロックに関するマッチョなイメージなんか、嫌いなんだ」と言い切っているのだ。確信犯的に「反ロック」を、アルバム制作でも、ツアーでも行っているのだ。ＤＭに関する、どんな画像、映像、アルバムを見つけてもわかる、「反ロック」を実行しているのだ。
このアルバムには「ジューダス」という曲がある。ユダとトマスを歌っている。映像作品「デヴォーショナル」でも、マーティンがシンセをバックに、ソロで歌っている。
はかなく、美しいバラードだ。クールなマーティンにとっては、ロックンロールなど、どうでもいいのだ。ただ美しい曲を作っていきたいだけなのだ。ロック云々関係なしに。
マーティンという人は１６歳からギターで曲を作ってきたにもかかわらず、ロックとは無縁でいたいと思っているのだ。まさしく現代の奇人。
このアルバムの日本盤には、ボーナス・トラックはない。なくていいのだ。完全に無駄のないアルバムを作りたかったのだから。そしてそれはかなった。
ファンとして贅沢を言うなら、１９９０年以来の、再来日をして欲しいということ。我々ファンは追いかけますよ。

DMとリアルタイムで接点を持った最初のアルバムなので思い入れたっぷりです。

コンセプト重視ライブアルバム

『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』リリース時のツアーから敢えて『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』収録曲のみピックアップし、アルバムと同じ曲目、順序で構成された『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』のライブバージョン。『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』の生生しさがより伝わるライブバージョンで、２枚を聴き比べるというコンセプト重視の作品となっている。けど、そんなこだわり聴くほうとしてはいらないよね。ツアーで演奏された他のアルバムからの曲も入れてくれよといいたくなる。ＤＭの集大成的なツアーだったのになあ。出し惜しみしすぎ！『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』を持っているなら、よほどこの作品が熱烈に好きというのでもない限り、敢えて買うほどのことはないと思う。そんな余裕があるなら他のオリジナルアルバムを買ったほうがいいです。

クソカッコいい

カッコいいです。
これはもうカッコいいとしか言いようがない。
ただギターじゃかじゃんやって
暗い歌詞歌って「こんなんどう?いいやろ?」
っていうカッコつけ方じゃなくて、
入念に構築されたカッコよさがあります。美学と言えばいいのかな。
とにかく衝撃を受けることは間違いないアルバム。
ボーカルも正しい意味で力強い。

惜しくも残念

ＤＶＤ付きということで購入しましたが、日本語字幕はありませんでした。（サブタイトルで字幕は選択できますが英語、フランス語とヨーロッパのいくつかの言語のみ）リージョンフリーのプレイヤーで再生できます。購入される方のご参考までに・・・。日本語字幕のついたものは発売されていないのでしょうか？映像が見られただけでもまだよかったですが、惜しくも残念です。

これが一つの到達点

このアルバムがＤＭの中で一つの到達点であることは間違いないと思います。ロック、エレポップ、ソウル、ブルースすべてを融合させた緻密なサウンドは、１０年以上経った今でも色あせることなく私の一番のお気に入りの一つです。しかし、このアルバムを最後にサウンドクリエイターのアランが脱退したことは非常に残念であり、このアルバム以降にリリースされたアルバムを聞く限り彼の存在がいかに大きかったことを痛感します。今後、これを超えるアルバムは出ないと個人的には思いますが、１ファンの私にとっては、まだバンドが現在進行形であるのが唯一の救いです。

すさまじいまでの祈り

当時このアルバムが出た直後のＭＴＶを見ていた時の事。マーティンが
「TAKE THIS（TAKE THATをからかって）が一体どうだって言うんだ。こ
れこそが音楽なんだ」と自信満々に語っていたのを懐かしく思います。
しばらくして出たライブビデオはＮＨＫのＢＳでも「カルトバンド特
集」と銘打って放映されました。私はこのバンドが好きなので「カル
ト」は勘弁して欲しいと思ったものです。
一言で言えば爛熟と言ったとこでしょうか。当時彼が持っていたテンシ
ョンのピークだったと思います。デーヴのヴォーカルも凄まじいまでの
祈りを感じさせるほど鬼気迫るものです。惜しいのは、これがアラン・
ワイルダー最後のアルバムだった事。ライブビデオで淡々とドラムを叩
くアランは格好良かった。本当に器用なサウンドエンジニアです。

言うまでもないことかもしれないが、やっぱりDMはライヴだ！

　アルバム『Songs of Faith ＆ Devotion』と収録曲も同じ、曲順も同じというライヴ・アルバム。まさにライヴで真価を発揮するバンド(？)であることを見せ付けるような作品。その貫禄は十分過ぎるほど伝わってきて、圧倒されてしまう！　だがそれと矛盾するようだが、収録曲１０曲というのは少し寂しい気もする。2枚組みの『101』のように過去の曲も『Songs～』の曲のように欲動ほどばしるごとく披露してくれたら、もう文句のつけようがないのだが、そうしてしまったら、このCDを制作した意味がなくなってしまうのか…。

ひと味違う

っていうのは、このアルバムは他とちょっと違って、ロック色が強い。エレキギターの音とか、ブルースっぽいリズムとか。歌い方も力強く、内にたまってたものを吐き出す、といった感じ。ソウルフルな歌い方、っていうのかな。エレクトロニックサウウンドが好きな私にとっては、びっくりしたと同時に、「入りにくいなぁ。」と思ったけど、今はすごい好きです。ほんとに。ボーカルのデイブも、「あなたにとってのベストアルバムは？」と聞かれたときに「Songs of Faith & Devotion.」と、このアルバムだと言っていたのも納得できる。ちょうどこのアルバムの時期は彼等の生活はドラッグアディクトなど、荒れていたときで、アルバムの内容やサウンドが共感できるものがあったみたい。詩もリアルで私自信も同じようなこと言いたいと思ってる。私が「入りにくい」と思ったのから「すごい好き」に逆転したきっかけは、ミュージックビデオでこのアルバムの曲を見た瞬間から。それほどゾクゾクさせられるビデオだったので、画像を見てみて。
