涙が出るほど素晴らしい・・・

もう、この名盤について、今更言及する必要などないと思いますが、書かせてください。
全曲、捨曲なしです。全部が全部、素敵です。
「パーソナル・ジーザス」「エンジョイ・ザ・サイレンス」については、今更書くこともないでしょう。書きたいのは、おしまいの「クリーン」です。
静かで、強烈。口数少ないようで、饒舌。現実的で、非現実的・・・
デペッシュの真骨頂のような曲なのです。
近年のライヴでは「クリーン」はあまり演奏されないでしょうが、是非このライヴ・ヴァージョンを見てみたいです。

ＤＭの最高傑作

「ウルトラ」「エキサイター」「プレイング・デッド」
数々の最新作が出るたびに
再度聴きたくなるアルバムがこの「ヴァイオレーター」だ。

単調な音から始まる１曲目「World in my eyes」から
「パーソナル・ジーザス」、「エンジョイ・ザ・サイレンス」への
曲の流れは神の領域ですらある。

現在聴くと、多少のスカスカ感はあるものの
それを払拭する出来の良さ。
必聴の名盤だ。

デペッシュ・モードは今もやってるし、アルバムも出し続けてますけど、ライヴをやるとこのアルバムから4、5曲はやってますよね。トリビュートアルバムも出てるんですけど、このアルバムから取り上げてる人が多いんですよ。僕自身はそれまでは打ち込みにはあまり興味がなくて聴いてなかったし、デペッシュ・モードも名前を知っている程度だったんですけど。
でも、このアルバムは、僕が生まれて初めて海外に行ったとき･･･、ロンドンなんですけど、買って持って行って、すごい聴いてましたね。その時の気分にぴったりだったんです。だから今でも聴くとそのときのロンドンの風景を思い出しますね。
で、メンバーに会えたんですよ、その時に。前やってたバンドのエンジニアさんがメンバーと知り合いだって言うんで、「大好きなんだよね」って話をしたら、「紹介してやるよ」って会わせてくれたんです。ただ、そのときのことは、緊張しちゃって全然覚えてないです（笑）。

若気の深層、理由なき煩悶

このアルバムが出た頃、アメリカの高校に通っていました。学生（Teenager）の間で、カリスマ的な人気を誇っていたのを覚えています。前作の”Music For The Masses”でやっとアメリカでメジャーになったDepeche Modeは、このアルバムで確固たる地位を築きます（一方、イギリスでの人気に陰りが・・・）。
“Black Celebration”で哲学（内向?ブラック?ART?）的な方向に歩み出したDepeche Modeの集大成ではないでしょうか。哲学的（ART）な”詩”は当時の自分には難しくて、友人と色々議論したものでした。しかし、その詩や議論の内容は決して大人には理解されない。そんなもどかしい時期を象徴するような作品でした。
不条理な大人社会と向き合うようになり、立ち向かおうとする一方で自分の心の奥底にもどんどん入り込んでしまう年頃。比較的分かり易い前向きな歌詞が多いアメリカ・ポップスシーンでDepeche Modeは異彩を放っていて、時代も相まって、悩める若者達のバイブル的存在でしたね。次の”Songs of Faith and Devotion”も好きなんですが、この作品を境にDepeche Modeから心が離れ始めたのも事実です。不思議ですね。
今、あの頃に抱いていたような悩みはありませんが、聞くたびに青春時代を思い出します。また、Depeche Modeの音楽性は時代を超えますね。Depeche Modeが残したアルバムの中で世界的に最もヒットした作品じゃないかな。お勧めです。

デペッシュモードといえばこれ

デペッシュモードの９０年代最初のアルバムであり、それまでの重厚なエレクトロニックサウンドから、音を抜き、ギター等の生楽器を積極的に導入し、アナログシンセ主体のシンプルなサウンドプロダクションになっている。結果的に世界中で大ヒットとなり、彼らの代表作となった。今から１５年以上も前の作品ながら現在でも全く打ち込みが古臭く感じないのは素晴らしいの一言。彼らのアルバムの中でも最も癖のない作風であり、入門盤としても最適です。ただシングル曲が秀逸なのに対して、その他の曲がやや弱い気もします。

神の再現

個人的な神。この概念の導入は画期的と言ってよい。
これほどまでに確固とした、世界を誰も成しえていない。
確かに、オアシスの傍若無尽な天然ぷり、coldplayのなりふり構わぬ哀愁ぶりには叶わない。だが、この薄暗い歌たちが喚起するのは似て非なる己だ。うつむきがちになる自分たちすべてだ。
